Blinn College sophomore Crystal Young has established herself as one of the top setters in the Region XIV Conference. Teammate Kariana Castanon-Hill is proving herself one of the conference's most dangerous hitters.
Both were named conference players of the week.
A sophomore from Friendswood, Young has been a dominant player in an offense averaging 13.1 kills per set. Her 978 (10.9 per set) assists lead the Region XIV South Zone.
Castanon-Hill has benefitted from Young's assists. The sophomore middle blocker from Oakland, Calif., has 261 kills on the season (2.5 per set) and 119 total blocks – including 22 solo stops. Against Wharton Junior College Oct. 16, Castanon-Hill blasted 11 kills and posted a .526 hitting percentage.
Last week, freshman libero Alyssa LaMont was named conference libero of the week. LaMont has a team-best 349 digs (3.4 per set) on the season.
The Bucs hit the road Friday for a 6 p.m. match against Hill College, then return home Wednesday at 6 p.m. against San Jacinto in a game that will decide which team enters the Region XIV Conference tournament ranked No. 1 out of the South Zone.
