Blinn College sophomore Bruna Evangelista has been named the Region XIV Conference South Zone player of the week and freshman Alyssa LaMont has been named libero of the week after the pair led the Buccaneers to five victories in as many days.
Blinn opened last week by defeating Trinity Valley in Brenham, then won all four matches at the Starr Corporation Tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho, including victories over sixth-ranked Salt Lake (Utah) and third-ranked Southern Idaho, the defending national champion.
Evangelista, an American Volleyball Coaches Association and NJCAA All-American last season, totaled 61 kills (3.38 per set) and 28 assists (1.55 per set), while LaMont anchored the defense with 84 digs, good for 4.0 per set.
Both players are now eligible for NJCAA national player of the week honors to be announced Wednesday.
The 13th-ranked Buccaneers travel to Pasadena today for a 6 p.m. match, then are off until Sept. 20, when they host Coastal Bend College at 6 p.m. at the Blinn P.E. Building.
