No. 16 Blinn men’s golf wins TJC Spring Invitational

BULLARD, Texas — The No. 16 Blinn College men's golf teams placed first and third out of six teams in the Tyler Junior College Spring Invitational at Oak Hurst Golf Course after four Buccaneers had top-10 finishes.

The Blinn White team claimed first place and led the Buccaneers to their first team win in the Blinn men's golf program's history. The Blinn White team posted a team score of 302 in the first round to sit in second place on Monday. The Buccaneers jumped ahead of Tyler Junior College with a team round of 304 on Tuesday for a final score of 606.

The Blinn Blue team finished in third place after posting a team score of 311 on the first day and concluding the tournament with a 301 for a two-round total of 612.Tyler placed second in the tournament with a two-round total of 609.

"It was a great day for Blinn golf and Bryce Honeck's 73 was the round of the day for the Blinn White Team and John Baker battled hard and shot 75," said David Johnson, Blinn head coach. "Those scores from today led the way for the first team win in Blinn history. I am extremely excited for all the players, my assistant coach Katie Johnston, and all of Blinn College."

Four Buccaneers finished in the top-10 and made the all-tournament team in Justin Dees, Riley Simmons, Isaiah Brevick and Travis Edwards.

"I am very proud of them all because it was a great team win for the Buccaneers with outstanding individual play," Johnson said.

Edwards led the Blinn White Team with a 1-under-par 71 and 79 to finish the tournament tied in third place. Dees also finished in the top-10 as he tied for sixth place after shooting a 3-over-par 75 and 77.

Honeck and Baker led the Buccaneers on Tuesday as Honeck posted a 1-over-par 73 after posting an 83 in the first round, and Baker shot a 3-over-par 75 after shooting a 79 in the first round. Eric Breeding shot a consistent 77 and 82 to help the Buccaneers win the title.

Simmons and Brevick led the Blinn Blue Team, finishing the tournament in a three-way tie for third place with Edwards. Simmons shot a consistent 75 in both rounds, while Brevick shot a 4-over-par 76 and 2-over-par 74. Jerrion Dukes shot an 82 and 73, Cameron Gray shot an 80 and 79, and Bryce Penn shot an 80 and 81.

Next, the Blinn men's and women's golf teams will compete in the Prairie View Invitational on March 15-17.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
