Dukes finishes fourth individually, Bucs take second as a team

TYLER, Texas — The Blinn College men's golf team broke two team records en route to a second-place finish at the Tyler Junior College Invitational played at Pine Springs Golf Club.

"One of the things that we wanted to do this week was play well both rounds and we did, so that is big for us moving into the offseason and the spring semester." said David Johnson, Blinn head coach. "Finishing two rounds under par as a team in golf is a hard thing to do and there are a lot of things that have to go right for that to happen. I am proud of how the guys played on the course and it was a great team effort where everyone contributed."

The Blinn Blue team broke the program's 18-hole team record with a score of 285 and the 36-hole team record with a score of 575. The Buccaneers placed second out of 10 teams, while No. 10 McLennan Community College took first.

Jerrion Dukes concluded the tournament in fourth place after shooting rounds of 72 and 70. Travis Edwards finished tied for eighth with scores of 74 and 69, and Bryce Penn tied for 10th after shooting two rounds of 72.

Teammates John Baker shot a 76 and 74, while Riley Simmons shot a 72 and 76.

The Blinn White team placed seventh with a team score of 611. Eric Breeding led with scores of 73 and 76, and Isaiah Brevick shot two rounds of 75.

"I would like to thank assistant coach Katie Johnston for all the hard work she has put in with both the men's and women's team," Johnson said. "We couldn't have done it without her."

Next, the men's and women's golf teams will begin the spring season at the University of Houston-Victoria Claude Jacobs Invitational in Victoria on Feb. 15-17.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
