No. 16 Blinn College softball sweeps Alvin, 9-1 and 9-2

BRENHAM, Texas — No. 16 Blinn College softball (41-12, 22-0) claimed its 22nd conference win to remain undefeated in Region XIV play by sweeping Alvin Community College on Tuesday at Hohlt Park.

The Buccaneers run-ruled Alvin in six innings, 9-1, to open the doubleheader. Then, Blinn finished the Dolphins in the second game, 9-2.

Blinn 9 – Alvin 1

Behind Meghan Morris' solid pitching performance and Mayela Fernandez's three RBIs, the Buccaneers were able to run-rule Alvin, 9-1, in six innings.

Morris sealed the win in the circle after throwing all six innings and allowing one run on six hits.

On offense, Fernandez hit a double and home run to lead Blinn in RBIs, while Sarah Cedillo and Kimber Cortemelia led the Buccaneers with two runs apiece.

Blinn opened the first inning with three runs as Cortemelia singled for Cedillo to score and Mackenzi Crews singled for Amber Langston and Cortemelia to come home.

The Buccaneers extended their lead to 7-0 in the third inning after Cortemelia scored on an error and Fernandez hit a three-run double to plate Maria Garcia, Bailey Zibelin and Courtney Ogle.

Alvin scored its sole run in the fourth inning before Blinn added two more in the sixth inning. Following singles by Cedillo and Anna Pisaro, Langston doubled for Blinn to walk off with the run-rule win.

Blinn's offense continued to dominate for the Buccaneers to beat Alvin, 9-2, for the sweep.

Alysa Torres earned the win for the Buccaneers after pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs on six hits.

Cortemelia led Blinn's offense with three RBIs and two runs. Cedillo and Langston also each scored two runs in the win.

Alvin scored the first run in the top of the first inning, but the Buccaneers hit two home runs to answer back in the bottom of the frame. After Cedillo and Langston drew walks, Cortemelia hit a three-run shot over the fence, while Zibelin followed with a solo home run for Blinn to lead 4-1.

Alvin cut Blinn's lead down to 4-2 by scoring one run in the second inning. However, Blinn answered back in the bottom of the inning with three runs to pull ahead 7-2. Langston singled for Cedillo to score, while Garcia hit a double for Langston and Cortemelia to come home.

Blinn added one run in the third inning when Kelsey Lowke singled for Crews to score. Pisaro scored Blinn's final run on an error in the fifth inning.

Next, Blinn will host Galveston College in a doubleheader for the final conference games of the regular season on Wednesday, May 1, starting at 2 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
