Blinn College softball edges out Coastal Bend, 3-2 and 5-3

BEEVILLE, Texas  Blinn College softball came out on top of two close games, defeating Coastal Bend College, 3-2 and 5-3, Saturday on the road.

With the pair of wins, the Buccaneers improve to 35-12 overall and 18-0 in Region XIV play. The Buccaneers also picked up their 16th straight win with the sweep.  

Blinn 3 – Coastal Bend 2

Behind Meghan Morris' complete game, Blinn edged out Coastal Bend, 3-2, to open the doubleheader.

In seven innings, Morris only surrendered two runs on five hits, while striking out eight.

Sarah Cedillo and Mayela Fernandez each led Blinn's offense with two hits apiece, while each scoring one run. Anna Pisaro also scored a run for the Buccaneers, and Cedillo and Langston each drove in one run.

Coastal Bend scored its only two runs in the second inning, but Blinn quickly stole the lead by scoring three runs in the third inning.

Cedillo's single drove in one run as Fernandez scored. Pisaro recorded Blinn's second run by stealing home and Langston knocked in the Buccaneers' final run with a double for Cedillo to score.

Morris kept Coastal Bend off the board for the next five innings for the win.

Blinn 5 – Coastal Bend 3

Cedillo hit a three-run homer to lift Blinn to a 5-3 win over Coastal Bend and for the Buccaneers to finish the doubleheader with a sweep.

Fernandez joined Cedillo in leading Blinn's offense by knocking in two runs. On defense, Alysa Torres sealed the win after pitching a complete game and giving up just three runs on five hits, while striking out one.

Coastal Bend scored the first two runs in the opening inning, but Blinn answered back in the second inning to even the score 2-2. Fernandez drove in both runs with a single that allowed Kimber Cortemelia and Bailey Zibelin to score after they each hit singles to leadoff the inning.

In the third inning, Coastal Bend took a 3-2 advantage and held onto it until Cedillo's three-run shot in the fifth inning.

Torres closed out the game by throwing three flawless frames for the win.

Next, Blinn will return home to face Baton Rouge Community College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23, starting at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
