Blinn College softball wins 10 straight in conference play

ALVIN, Texas — Blinn College softball (25-12, 10-0) claimed its 10th straight conference win to remain undefeated in Region XIV play after defeating Alvin Community College, 7-2, and run-ruling the Dolphins, 12-1, in five innings for the sweep Friday afternoon.

Blinn 7 – Alvin 2

Kimber Cortemelia stepped up to the plate for the Buccaneers, driving in three runs to lead Blinn to a 7-2 win over Alvin to open the doubleheader.

Cortemelia went 3-for-4 with two singles and a three-run home run, while Amber Langston scored three runs in the win.

Meghan Morris recorded the win in the circle, tossing a complete game and only surrendering two runs on five hits.

Langston scored Blinn's first run on an error in the first inning for the Buccaneers to lead 1-0.

Alvin scored in the second inning to even the score until Blinn pulled back ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning. Courtney Ogle drove in the run with a single for Maria Garcia to score.

In the fifth inning, Blinn tacked on a run when Langston scored on Garcia's single.

Blinn's offense exploded for four runs in the seventh inning after Cortemelia hit a three-run homer and Ogle hit a one-run single for Garcia to score.

Alvin scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Blinn 12 – Alvin 1

Blinn used a combination of strong defense and offense to blow past Alvin, 12-1, in five innings.

Sarah Cedillo, Mayela Fernandez, Langston and Cortemelia each drove in two runs, while Garcia led Blinn with three runs.

Alysa Torres recorded the win after only allowing one run on seven hits in five innings.

Blinn first took a 9-0 lead after scoring four runs in the first inning and five runs in the third inning. Cortemelia knocked in the first two runs with a two-run double, while Cedillo followed with a two-run single. Blinn added its fifth and sixth runs on an error, while Fernandez scored on a sacrifice fly. Langston drove in the final two runs of the third inning with a single.

Alvin scored its only run in the bottom of the third inning before Blinn added three more runs to the board in the fourth. Mackenzi Crews scored the first run by walking the bases loaded, Bailey Zibelin scored on Tori Alvarez Lopez's line drive and Cedillo scored on an error for the Buccaneers to lead 12-0.

Next, Blinn will return home for a doubleheader against McLennan Community College on Monday, April 1, starting at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
