Blinn volleyball duo signs with four-year programs

A pair of Blinn College volleyball players signed national letters of intent today to continue their careers at four-year programs.

Sophomore defensive specialist Cara Fisher signed with the University of Mississippi and freshman outside hitter Tyanna Roy signed with San Jose State University. Roy was a first-team all-Region XIV Conference selection while Fisher earned second-team all-conference honors.

Roy, a 6-0 outside hitter from Hayward, Calif., was the Bucs' second-leading hitter with 173 kills on the season (2.14 per set). She ranked third on the team with 153 digs (1.89 per set) and 42 blocks (0.52 per set). "She's had the ability all year to be a six-rotation player," said head coach Erin Mellinger. "She was willing to do whatever the team needed her to do and she was terrific at it."

Fisher, a 5-3 libero from Manvel, ranked second on the team with 203 digs (3.27 per set). She transferred to Blinn from the University of New Mexico.

"We're going to miss Cara," Mellinger said. "She ran our serve receive and set up the offense, but she also had a terrific personality and her fiery attitude is going to translate to great success at Ole Miss."

Blinn went 25-7 and reached the Region XIV Tournament quarterfinals last Fall in Mellinger's first season with the Buccaneers.

"It's amazing to have a freshman come in for one year and get the opportunity to go to the four-year school of her choice, and then have a sophomore who gets to continue her career in the Southeastern Conference," Mellinger said. "It really shows the kind of program we have here at Blinn College."

Blinn has one of the most storied programs in the NJCAA, with two national championships, 14 consecutive winning seasons, 15 All-Americans and 56 players who have continued their playing careers at four-year colleges and universities.
