Blinn recognizes All-American volleyball player

Freshman All-American volleyball player Bruna Evangelista was recognized prior to Blinn College's men's basketball game against San Jacinto today at the Blinn P.E. Building.

Evangelista, a 6-foot-1 freshman middle blocker from Brazil, was named a second-team All-American by both the National Junior College Athletic Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association this season. She is the 15th All-American in program history.

"She led us the entire year and so I really felt like it was a well-deserved honor for her," said Blinn volleyball coach Erin Mellinger. "She did her job every time she stepped on the floor."

Evangelista posted 282 kills (3.17 per set) and 91 blocks (1.02 per set) for the Buccaneers this season, including a .347 hitting percentage. Arguably her best match of the year came at the Region XIV Tournament on Nov. 3, when she posted 25 kills and three blocks in a 3-1 victory over Panola College.

Evangelista wants to play for the Brazilian national team after graduating with an engineering degree. She came to Blinn after winning two state championships at Caio Libano Soares High School.

Evangelista was named first-team all-Region XIV and the league's newcomer of the year in November after leading the Buccaneers to a 25-7 record.
