McCalister records six RBIs in Blinn’s 11-6 win over Laredo

BRENHAM, Texas   Reggie McCalister totaled six RBIs in Blinn College baseball's 11-6 win over Laredo College on Friday night to open the conference series at Leroy Dreyer Field.

In the second game of the doubleheader Laredo came back to defeat Blinn, 5-4, in the 10th inning.

With the split, Blinn is now 25-16 overall and 17-12 in Region XIV play.

Blinn 11 – Laredo 6

McCalister recorded six RBIs to propel Blinn to an 11-6 victory over Laredo to open the doubleheader.

McCalister led the offense in RBIs with a double, home run and walk, while Blake Faecher led Blinn with three runs. 

Laredo opened the game with a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the momentum shifted in the bottom of the inning when Blinn scored five runs. Jake Miller scored the first run on a wild pitch and McCalister drove in the next three runs with a double to tie the game. Preston Hoffart followed with a double for McCalister to score and Blinn to take a 5-4 lead.

Blinn added a run in the second inning when Alec Sanchez scored on an error, then tacked on two more in the third inning when Faecher tagged up on a line out and Brett Minninch scored on another Laredo error to lead 8-4.

Laredo closed in on Blinn 8-6 after scoring two runs in the fourth inning, but the Buccaneers held onto the lead and scored the final three runs in the game. McCalister walked the bases loaded for Cameron Gibbons to score in the fourth inning, then hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for Blinn to take an 11-6 lead.

John Chomko, who came out of the bullpen for 3 2/3 innings without allowing a hit, shutdown Laredo's offense in the seventh inning for Blinn to win.

Laredo 5 – Blinn 4

The Buccaneers dropped the second game of the doubleheader to Laredo, 5-4, in the 10th inning.

Minninch and Westley Schields each recorded two hits and a RBI in the win to lead the offense, while Minninch also led Blinn with two runs. 

Laredo took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, but two solo home runs off the bats of McCalister and Minninch allowed Blinn to even the score in the fifth inning.

Blinn took a 4-2 lead for the first time in the seventh inning when Minninch scored on Schields' bunt single and Schields scored on a fielder's choice. However, Laredo rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to even the score again.

The game remained tied 4-4 until the 10th inning when Laredo scored one run. McCalister drew a walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, but was left stranded as Blinn fell. 

Next, Blinn will finish the four-game series against Laredo with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, starting at noon at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
