Parrish drives in all five runs to help Blinn past Laredo in opener, 5-0

BRENHAM, Texas – Colton Parrish supplied the runs and Nick Masarik kept Laredo Community College off the scoreboard as Blinn College baseball picked up a 5-0 victory to open the doubleheader Friday evening at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham.

Laredo did come back to win the second game 8-6 in 10 innings to split the doubleheader. With the split, Blinn's overall record moves to 22-26 and 12-22 in the Region XIV South Zone standings.

Blinn 5 – Laredo 0

Parrish provided the run support for Blinn by knocking in all five runs with a home run and a double and Masarik kept Laredo off the scoreboard with seven scoreless innings as the Buccaneers beat Laredo 5-0 to open the doubleheader.

Parrish went 2 of 3 and knocked in all five runs to lead the way. Elijah MacNamee hit a double and a single and scored twice while Austen Swift singled twice and scored two times as well.

Masarik pitched all seven innings in the win to improve to 4-7 on the year after giving up only five hits and striking out six in the shutout.

Blinn started off the scoring in the second inning when MacNamee doubled and then Swift followed with a single. Parrish brought both in with a home run down the line and into the trees just past the fence in right for a 3-0 lead.

Parrish provided the runs in the sixth as well when MacNamee walked and Swift followed with a single. Parrish brought both in again with a double to right-center for a 5-0 lead that would hold up until last out thanks to the pitching of Masarik.

Laredo 8 – Blinn 6

Blinn was able to come back from a 6-2 deficit in the middle innings against Laredo to tie the game but it was Laredo coming out on top with an 8-6 victory in 10 innings to split the doubleheader.

George Pappas drove in three with a pair of singles while Sam McElreath drove in a pair of runs without a hit. MacNamee also drove in a run. Angel De La Fuente hit two singles and a double while Swift hit a triple and a double in the loss.

Beau O'Hara was saddled with the loss after coming on in relief and pitching 5 1-3 innings and giving up only four earned runs while striking out five.

Laredo jumped out early with a single run in the first inning but Blinn came right back in the bottom half. Jay Anderson started it off with a one-out double and that was followed by an RBI double by MacNamee to center to tie the game up at 1-1 after one. Laredo added two runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Blinn was able to cut into that lead in the bottom of the fourth when Parrish singled to lead off the inning and Pappas ripped an RBI single up the middle to get Blinn within 3-2. Laredo would take its biggest lead of the game with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 6-2 advantage.

The Buccaneers got one back in the bottom of the sixth when Swift started the inning with a triple and came in to score on an RBI ground out by McElreath to get within 6-3.

Blinn came after the lead in the seventh inning as MacNamee started it off with a single and then came around to score on an error to get within 6-4. Pappas delivered a big single to drive in two runs to knot the game at 6-6. Unfortunately, that would be the final run scored as Laredo scored two runs in the 10th inning to take the win.

Blinn will host another doubleheader with Laredo on Saturday, April 30 beginning at noon.
