The Blinn College softball team was swept by No. 14 Galveston College in a Region XIV South Zone doubleheader Sunday in Galveston, Texas.

The Whitecaps earned a 6-2 victory in the opener before securing a 1-0 shutout in the finale.

The Buccaneers are now 13-7 overall and 2-2 in the South.

"It was just a disappointing day for us," Blinn head coach Rick Church said. "Galveston's pitchers were good, but when you talk about winning conference or the Region XIV Tournament, you're going to face good pitchers. We have to learn to compete against better pitching."

In game one, Galveston scored three runs in the third inning and kept the Bucs scoreless through five frames. Blinn finally broke through on a two-run home run from sophomore Skylar Shanahan in the top of the sixth inning.

The Whitcaps responded in the home half of the sixth, tallying three more runs to pull away.

"Give Galveston credit; we pulled within one but they kept coming at us," Church added. 

Blinn finished with seven hits, including two apiece for Shanahan and sophomore Emily Kristynik, who doubled. 

In the pitcher's circle, freshman Peyton Welker was charged with the loss following a five-inning stint. She allowed six earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Shanahan worked the sixth inning and allowed one hit.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Chloee Mason gave Blinn a sparkling effort, but was on the losing side of a one-run ballgame.

Mason tossed a complete game, allowing just one earned run on five hits across six innings. She walked one and fanned one.

"Chloee kept us in it," Church said.

Galveston scored the game's lone run in the third inning.

The Bucs finished with four hits. Kristynik again had a double for Blinn.

Up next, Blinn takes on South Zone rival Angelina College in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
