Nimble Kimble leads Buccaneers past Tyler, 35-27

The Blinn Buccaneer freshmen are growing up fast.

Freshman quarterback Garry Kimble scored four total touchdowns – two rushing and two through the air – and fellow freshman Klartel Claridy ran for 111 yards and a touchdown in Blinn's 35-27 victory over the Tyler Apaches Saturday night at Cub Stadium.

The victory evened the Buccaneers' record at 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in Southwest Junior College Football Conference play. Tyler fell to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference.

Kimble completed 9 of 23 passes on the night for 202 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. In the third quarter, he found Vasquez Haynes for a 48-yard touchdown, then connected with D.D. Westbrook for a 64-yard score that ended up being the game's final touchdown.

Kimble was even more impressive running the ball, piling up 190 yards and two first-half touchdowns on 15 carries.

After JaVante Mack scored to give Tyler a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, it was a Kimble 68-yard touchdown run that tied the score. In the second quarter, Kimble ran 65 yards untouched to give the Buccaneers a 14-10 lead.

Blinn led 21-17 at halftime.

Claridy, a freshman running back out of Brenham High School, led the Buccaneers with 20 carries on the night. He scored on an 8-yard run with 52 seconds remaining in the first half.

Westbrook finished with three receptions for 118 yards while Haynes had three catches for 65 yards.

The Buccaneers are off next weekend before hosting Kilgore College on Oct. 6. That game will kick off at 5 p.m. at Cub Stadium.
