Buccaneers cruise to home-opening victory

BRENHAM, Texas – The 11th-ranked Blinn College football team earned its first win of the 2012 season in convincing fashion here Saturday night, defeating the Southeast Prep Spartans 62-21 at Cub Stadium.

Freshman quarterback Garry Kimble got the Buccaneers' scoring started on their second possession, scoring on a 21-yard score for the game's first touchdown. Southeast Prep would answer with a big play of their own, a 57-yard touchdown run from Ricky Lunford.

The teams would trade touchdowns again on their next possessions, as Blinn's Vasquez Haynes scored on a 39-yard touchdown strike from Kimble, and Southeast Prep's Everett Anderson found Otis Seals for a 73-yard touchdown strike.

But from there, the Buccaneers would dominate.

Kimble found D.D. Westbrook for a 75-yard touchdown pass with 7:25 to go in the first quarter, and running back Donavan Williams closed out the quarter with a 2-yard touchdown to give the Buccaneers a 28-14 lead.

Kimble and Haynes hooked up for a 21-yard touchdown to make it 35-14 early in the second quarter and Denzel Johnson blocked a punt and returned it for a 25-yard touchdown with 11:12 remaining in the half. Jaevon Richardson caught a 25-yard touchdown pass just before halftime to make it 49-14 at the break.

Williams scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before the Buccaneers started mixing up the lineup. Backup quarterback Abraham Prather threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Westbrook with 5:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Anderson punched in a 1-yard touchdown run for the Spartans to make it 62-21 early in the fourth quarter to end the evening's scoring.

The Buccaneer defense created a pair of turnovers on the night as Kyle Holmes recovered a fumble in the first quarter and Jevon Neal intercepted a second-quarter pass in the end zone. A couple plays later, Neal made a ferocious special teams tackle to stuff a Southeast Prep punt return.

The victory evened Blinn's record to 1-1 on the season. The Bucs lost their season opener to second-ranked Butler, 28-10.

Southeast Prep fell to 0-3 on the season.

Blinn will be back at home on Saturday when it hosts Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 7 p.m. in Cub Stadium. The game will mark the Bucs' Southwest Junior College Football Conference opener.
