Buccaneer baseball, softball garner academic honors

The Blinn Buccaneers were named 2011-12 Baseball and Softball All-Academic teams by the NJCAA Monday after both squads excelled on the diamond and in the classroom this Spring.

More than 450 of the NJCAA's 3,500 teams qualified for All-Academic accolades, which require an overall team grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. The Buccaneer baseball team posted a 3.15 GPA while the softball team recorded a 3.11.

"Academic success is a priority at Blinn College, for our students and for our coaches and administrators," Blinn Athletic Director Scott Schumacher said. "Our student-athletes work hard not only on the field or in the gym, but also in the classroom."

This marks the fourth time in the last five years that the Buccaneer baseball team has been recognized as an NJCAA All-Academic team and its sixth in the last 10. The Buccaneers have had 20 baseball players named academic All-Americans since 2001.

Earlier this month, Blinn named 48 student-athletes to its Spring 2012 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, which required student-athletes to complete a minimum of 12 hours and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above. Seventeen baseball players and 10 softball players were named to the honor roll. Three baseball players – Kevin Hahn, Holden Cammack and Kyle Mueller – and one softball player – Leandra Maly – earned 4.0 GPAs.

This marks the 29th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom.
