Blinn College’s Christy Young named Buccaneer Backer of the Year

The Blinn College athletic department presented Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships Christy Young with the fifth annual Buccaneer Backer of the Year Award at the Buccaneer Backer golf tournament held Friday, Sept. 28, at Bellville Country Club.

"I have been supporting Blinn College athletics for as long as I can remember, so receiving this award is a big honor," Young said. "I always look forward to seeing athletes start with me in the financial aid office and then moving on to the court and field and being successful."

Young is in her 13th year at Blinn, and since 2015 has served as the Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships. She has also served as a financial aid advisor and telephone information specialist for the College and is a Blinn alumna.

Blinn athletic director Scott Schumacher honored Young with the award in recognition of her commitment to Blinn athletics prior to the tournament.

"Christy really has the students' best interest at heart, not only with Blinn's athletes, but all the students on campus," Schumacher said. "She is always there to support all of our athletic teams and we appreciate everything she does for our student-athletes."

Previous Buccaneer Backer of the Year Award winners include former Texas Speaker of the House Gus Mutscher, Biology Professor Karen Killion, and former Athletic Directors Don Wilhelm and Leroy Dreyer.

The Buccaneer Backer Club was formed to raise financial support and awareness for all athletic programs at Blinn College. A modest contribution of $100 helps the Buccaneer Backers provide aid in funding postseason travel, equipment, and facility upgrades. Last season, the Buccaneers won cheer and dance championships. The volleyball team placed seventh at nationals and the women's basketball team reached the Sweet 16 at the Division I National Championships.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
