Blinn will match up with Navarro to open first round of Region XIV tournament

Blinn College softball will open up play in the Region XIV tournament on Thursday, April 28 against Navarro College at 10 a.m. at San Jacinto College-South campus in Pasadena.

The Buccaneers secured the second seed in the Region XIV South Zone standings with a 20-4 conference record and finished with a 35-16 overall record. Navarro finished with an 18-10 record in the in the Region XIV East Zone Division. All tournament games will be broadcast live on www.psnsports.com as the tournament will run until May 1.

"We have struggled at times this season but we have been playing more consistent softball recently," said Blinn head coach Rick Church. "We have played better by doing it together as a team and not having just one or two stand out players."

Blinn enters the regional tournament on an eight-game winning streak as the team has a .340 batting average in 51 games.

Sophomore shortstop Katie Andrie leads the team in hitting with a .439 average as she had also brought in 40 runs and knocked seven home runs during the season. Freshman left-handed hitters Nicole Garcia (.425) and Kalli Edwards (.355) both have been able to get on base for the Buccaneers.

Jordin Wilkins leads the team in home runs with 11 and a .314 batting average while Meghann Wrinkle was second in home runs with eight and hit for a .333 average.

Sam Junkin and Bobbi Berkey have been pitching strong down the stretch for the Buccaneers. Junkin finished the regular season with a 17-4 record in 133 innings while maintaining an earned run average of 2.58. Berkey has pitched 83 1-3 innings on the year and struck out 39 batters while maintaining a 3.53 ERA.
