No. 20 Blinn men’s golf opens season with second-place finish

LONGVIEW, Texas — The No. 20 Blinn College men's golf teams placed second and seventh out of 12 teams at the Pinecrest Invitational after three Buccaneers had top-10 finishes at the Pinecrest Country Club Tuesday. 

"I was pleased with the way we competed today and how we stayed in the present, focused on the next shot, and didn't worry about the last shot," head coach David Johnson said. "That is a huge step to take in your first tournament after a year layoff from competitive golf.

The Blinn Blue team posted team scores of 304 and 291 on the first day, and concluded the tournament with a 291 for a three-round total of 886. The University of Houston-Victoria won the tournament with a three-round total of 880. 

Three Buccaneers finished in the top-10 in John Baker, Riley Simmons, and Cameron Gray

"Baker, Simmons, and Gray played solid golf for us in all three rounds," Johnson said. "It was great to get back to playing again."

Baker led the Blinn Blue team with a 74, an even par 71, and 1-over-par 72 to finish the tournament in third place. Simmons tied for fourth place with a 76 and two rounds of 71, while Gray tied for 10th place with a 75, two-over-par 73, and 74.  

In addition, Travis Edwards shot a three-round score of 233 to tie for 27th place, Bryce Honeck shot a three-round score of 245, and Jack Looney shot a three-round score of 250.  

The Blinn White team finished in seventh place after recording team scores of 311 and 325 the first day, and concluding the tournament with a 310 for a three-round total of 946. 

Justin Dees led the Blinn White team with two rounds of 76 and 80 for 24th place. Roup tied for 29th place after shooting a 77, 79, and 78.  

Kannin Mikulik shot a three-round score of 235 and Brock Schobel shot a three-round score of 245. 

Next, the Blinn College men's and women's golf teams will compete in the Prairie View Relays Invitational on March 14-16. 

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
