Free throws save No. 25 Midland as Blinn's upset bid falls short at Wrangler Shootout

Needing just one defensive stop to seal a victory over No. 25 Midland College, the Blinn College men's basketball team had apparently gotten just that.

Then, an official blew his whistle.

Midland guard Doug Young drew a foul as he missed a game-winning 3-pointer through the final buzzer and was sent to the free throw line with 0.4 seconds remaining. Young sank all three shots to send the Chaparrals to an 84-83 victory over the Buccaneers on Saturday at the Wrangler Shootout at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas.

"We played a fantastic game … we ran our offense, and we guarded well," Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher said. "The guys played hard and competed, and they were very disappointed in the locker room afterward because they knew they played very well. We had a chance to win it, but this is how it goes sometimes. You either win or you learn, and we learned that it's not fun to lose."

Sophomore guard Bakari LaStrap hit one of two free throws with five seconds remaining to put Blinn (5-3) ahead 83-81.

After Young's three makes from the line, Blinn sophomore guard Marco Foster threw up a long 3 at the buzzer but his attempt missed its mark.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish with neither team pulling too far ahead for the entirety.

Midland took a 43-42 edge into halftime.

Sophomore guard Elijah Elliott led the Bucs with 25 points, including four 3s. Foster had 16 points and five rebounds, LaStrap had 15 points, and sophomore guard Jaja Sanni tallied 11 points. Sophomore guard Damian Watson and sophomore forward Alex Tsynkevich finished with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

Blinn is now 1-1 in two games at the Shootout after defeating New Mexico Junior College in the tournament opener on Friday. The Bucs finish the Shootout with a tilt against No. 5 Odessa at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
