GALVESTON, Texas — The Blinn College baseball team won a pair of conference games against Galveston College on the road Wednesday.
Blinn opened the doubleheader with a 2-0 shutout win, then rallied back for a 10-5 extra-inning victory for the sweep.
With the pair of wins, the Buccaneers improved their overall record to 9-1 and conference record to 4-0.
"Caden Homiok on the mound and Patrick Hail in relief were spectacular in Game 1, and Jake Olson's relief effort allowed us to get the win in Game 2," head coach Harvey McIntyre said. "I am proud of the team's response in Game 2. We had to answer the bell down 4-0, made it 4-4, and ran away with it late."
Blinn 2 – Galveston 0
The Buccaneers opened the doubleheader with a 2-0 win over Galveston.
Caden Homniok, Patrick Hail, and Grant Wood combined on the mound for the shutout. Homniok pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out seven for the win. In relief, Hail pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out six, and Wood pitched one scoreless inning and struck out three, to record the save.
Kam Kelton led the offense with two hits, while Preston Hoffart recorded Blinn's only RBI. Jack Schell and Nick Wolff each scored one run in the win.
After three scoreless innings, Blinn got on the board in the fourth inning when Wolff scored on a wild pitch.
The Buccaneers scored their final run in the seventh inning after Hoffart drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Wood fanned the side in the bottom of the seventh for Blinn to earn the shutout victory.
Blinn 10 – Galveston 5
Blinn scored six runs in the 10th inning for a comeback win against Galveston, 10-5.
Kelton led the Buccaneers with four hits, including a triple, and had two runs and one RBI, while Jack Schell had three hits, scored two runs, and had two RBIs. Wolff and Hoffart also each recorded two RBIs in the win.
On the mound, Hutchins started the game for the Buccaneers and gave up four runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He led Blinn with seven strikeouts. Colten Drake pitched a scoreless 2/3 innings, and Blane Romero pitched one scoreless inning. Olson earned the win after only surrendering one run on four hits, while striking out four in 3 2/3 innings.
After four scoreless innings, Galveston landed on the board with four unearned runs to take the lead.
Blinn scored its first run in the sixth inning when Wolff scored on a passed ball. Then, the Buccaneers rallied back to even the score in the seventh inning when Wolff hit a two-run triple and then scored on a wild pitch.
The game remained tied 4-4 until the Buccaneers' offense exploded for six runs in the 10th inning. Blinn strung together five straight hits, including Schell's two-run double to lead 6-4. Kelton brought in Blinn's next run with a single and then Schell scored on an error. Hoffart drove in Blinn's final two runs with a single for the Buccaneers to lead 10-4.
Galveston rallied for one run in the bottom of the 10th inning before falling to the Buccaneers.
Next, the Buccaneers will return home for a pair of conference games against No. 4 San Jacinto College-North on Saturday, March 13, starting at 2 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
