BRENHAM, Texas — The No. 19 Blinn College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Coastal Bend College on Wednesday at Leroy Dreyer Field.
Coastal Bend opened the doubleheader with a 1-0 win over the Buccaneers, then concluded the day with a 7-4 win.
With the pair of losses, the Buccaneers are now 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Coastal Bend 1 – Blinn O
Coastal Bend came out on top of a pitching duel against Blinn, 1-0, to open the doubleheader.
Blinn's pitching was phenomenal as Caden Homniok pitched 5 2/3 innings and only surrendered one run on six hits, while striking out seven. Colten Drake pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and struck out two.
The Buccaneers couldn't get the offense rolling as Preston Hoffart and Tyler Russell were the only two to come up with one hit.
Coastal Bend scored the only run of the game in the first inning and held the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the game.
Coastal Bend 7 – Blinn 4
Although the Buccaneers outhit Coastal Bend in the second game, they came up short on runs and fell, 7-4.
Blinn outhit the Cougars 8-6 as Jack Schell led the way with two hits for the Buccaneers. Brandon Williams led Blinn with two RBIs, while Nick Wolff led with two runs. Graden Emmons came up with one RBI, while Kam Kelton and Russell each scored one run.
Jace Hutchins started on the mound for Blinn, struck out 10 in 3 2/3 innings, and allowed just four earned runs on two hits. Patrick Hail only surrendered one run in three innings, while Trevor Mott pitched a hitless 1 1/3 innings and Grant Wood pitched one scoreless inning.
Coastal Bend opened the game with a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and Blinn couldn't recover from the deficit.
The Buccaneers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to trail 5-2. After Blinn loaded the bases, Wolff scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Emmons and Russell scored on a groundout.
In the fourth inning, Coastal Bend extended its lead to 6-2 with one run.
The Buccaneers scored their final two runs in the sixth inning when Kelton scored on a passed ball and Wolff scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Williams.
The Cougars scored the final run of the game in the seventh inning to lead, 7-4. Blinn tried to rally, but left five on over the next three frames.
Next, the Buccaneers will travel to take on Wharton County Junior College in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20, starting at 2 p.m.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
