Two former Blinn baseball players selected in 2016 MLB draft

Two former Blinn College baseball heard their names called during the final day of the 2016 Major League Baseball amateur draft.

Pitcher Holden Cammack, who played at Blinn in 2012 and 2013, was selected 494th in the 16th round by the Chicago Cubs out of Oral Roberts (Okla.) University. Pitcher Dillon Mazzoccoli, who pitched at Blinn in 2014, was selected 1,064th in the 35th round out of Texas State University by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Both players moved to the mound after playing other positions with the Buccaneers.

Cammack was a catcher during his 2012 and 2013 seasons with Blinn. He hit .247 his freshman year and .244 as a sophomore year, driving in 24 runs during those two years. Cammack switched to pitcher at Oral Roberts.

"Holden is really new to pitching but has always had great arm strength," said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn baseball coach.

Mazzoccoli pitched 33 1/3 innings in 2014 and was second on the team with an ERA of 2.97 while striking out 19. He originally came to Blinn as a shortstop but switched to pitcher and found success.

"Once he switched positions, I would get a call from a pro scout after each start of his," McIntyre said. "He should have a future in pro ball."

Over the past 15 seasons, McIntyre has coached 36 former players who have been drafted into professional baseball.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 34 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
