Galveston rallies late to slip past Blinn

Galveston College staged a late-game rally to defeat the Blinn College baseball team 6-5 in a Region XIV South tilt Friday in Galveston, Texas.

Blinn led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Whitecaps tied the game with a five-run rally, then pulled ahead with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Dave Wilson paced Blinn with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including an RBI. Liam Koleci doubled, scored, and drove in a run; Jett Garcia also doubled and scored; and Sean Monsour had a hit and an RBI. Luke Nail and Garrison Weiss also crossed the plate for the Bucs.

The Whitecaps out-hit Blinn 12-8.

Evan Aschenbeck pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Eric Oakes was charged with the loss in relief after allowing an earned run in one inning of work.

"I'm very proud of the bounce-back and competitiveness they showed today (after losing to Galveston on Wednesday)," Blinn head coach Harvey McIntyre said. "They poured it out and were ready to play.

"We had some positive at bats, Evan got us into the seventh … we just didn't get off the field in the seventh inning to keep our lead and that was the kicker. We'll show up Sunday ready to go."

The Buccaneers are 9-21 overall with a 5-11 record in the South Zone. They host the Whitecaps for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fireman's Park in Brenham.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
