GALVESTON, Texas – Blinn College softball closed out the 2018 Galveston College Invitational with a 5-3 win over Navarro College on Saturday, Feb. 3.

All of the runs scored in the game were in the first two innings before both teams buckled down defensively and threw five scoreless innings.

Sydney Gutierrez went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run, while Amber Langston went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in a run to lead the Blinn offense. Morgan Gray, Calli Birch and Lauren Coerver all scored a run in the win, while Amy Alexander and Alivia Villarreal batted in runs for Blinn.

Kassidy Rhoudes sealed the win the circle for the Buccaneers after throwing two innings and surrendering three runs on three hits. Meghan Morris came in the circle for the final five innings and surrendered four hits, while throwing all scoreless innings.

The Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Villarreal hit a one-run single for Gray to score. However, Navarro quickly evened the score 1-1 in the bottom of the opening inning.

In the second inning, Blinn scored four runs for a 5-1 lead that the Buccaneers held for the remainder of the game. An error landed Birch on first base and Coerver hit a single to start the inning. Birch scored on a one-run single hit by Langston and Gutierrez walked the bases loaded. Blinn extended its lead to 3-1 after Alexander was hit by a pitch to score a run. Blinn took advantage of an error by Navarro in the outfield that allowed Langston and Gutierrez to score for Blinn to hold a four-run lead in the second inning.

Navarro tacked on its final two runs in the bottom of the second inning and trailed 5-3 for the remainder of the game.

Blinn finished the Galveston College Invitational with a 3-1 record and increased its overall record to 4-2.

The Buccaneers are back in action at Hohlt Park on Wednesday, February 7 when they take on McLennan Community College in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
