Buccaneers top Laredo in Region XIV tilt

LAREDO, Texas – The 14th-ranked Blinn College volleyball team picked up its second consecutive victory here Tuesday night, defeating Laredo 22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 behind another balanced effort.

"Everybody's starting to contribute a bit," said head coach Erin Mellinger, whose team improved to 12-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Region XIV Conference. "We're getting closer to where we need to be."

Sophomore outside hitter Ksenia Sukhareva posted a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs, and freshman middle blocker Bruna Evangelista nearly matched the feat with nine kills and nine blocks.

"Ksenia was hitting the ball so hard it bounced off the floor and in our gym would have hit the ceiling," Mellinger said. "She was hitting it really hard tonight, and if we'd set Bruna more she could have been in double-digit kills as well."

Freshman outside hitter Evely Macedo posted six kills and 15 digs, and sophomore right side Dani Schultz hit .333 with three kills on six attempts. Freshman setter Crystal Young had 33 assists and eight blocks, and freshman libero Tori Estrada posted a team-high 18 digs.

The Buccaneers, who are just two matches into a seven-match road swing, will travel to Beeville Friday for a 6 p.m. contest against Coastal Bend College.
