Former Blinn wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson named 2022 Biletnikoff Award finalist

Blinn College alumnus and current Iowa State University wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson has been named a finalist for the 2022 Biletnikoff Award.

The prestigious achievement is awarded annually to the top receiver in NCAA Division I football.

Hutchinson, a senior, leads the nation with 107 receptions this season and is seventh nationally with 1,171 yards. He has six touchdowns and has posted 100 yards or more in seven of his 12 games this fall.

Hutchinson's 107 catches set a new Iowa State single-season record, and the Jacksonville, Fla., native is also the Cyclone's career leader in receptions with 254.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound pass catcher spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons at Blinn under head coach Ryan Mahon. Hutchinson amassed 62 catches for 958 yards and seven touchdowns with the Buccaneers.

"He's had an amazing college career," Mahon said. "He played so well here, and now his body of work and consistency really shows through and that is why he's being considered for this award. To even be considered is such a highlight, and I'm really proud and happy for him because he's earned it."

Hutchinson is the second former Buccaneer receiver in the past seven seasons to earn recognition as a Biletnikoff finalist. Dede Westbrook, who played one season at Blinn (2014), won the award in 2016 after totaling 80 catches for 1,524 yards and 17 touchdowns at the University of Oklahoma.

Hutchinson's success continues a big year for former Buccaneer receivers after Hutchinson's Blinn teammate Danny Gray was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers in April.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
