Tyler Johnson is entering his second year on the Blinn College baseball coaching staff under head coach Harvey McIntyre. Johnson was named the assistant baseball coach in August 2017, and assists with catchers, outfielders, hitters, while coaching first base.

During his first season with Blinn, Johnson coached the 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings NJCAA Division I Baseball Gold Glove recipient Brandon Ashy. Ashy posted a .997 fielding percentage as a catcher, while also picking up all-region and all-conference honors.

Before joining Blinn, Johnson was an intern for player development for the Texas Rangers where he was assigned to the Hickory Crawdads during the 2017 season in Hickory, North Carolina. While with the Crawdads, Johnson was under the leadership of Spike Owen.

Johnson’s previous coaching experience was with Danny Florence in the Frozen Ropes organization out of McKinney, Texas during the summers of 2014-16. Their teams competed in the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, New Mexico in 2014 and 2015. Prior to coaching for the Frozen Ropes, Johnson was a baseball camp coach at the University of Texas in 2011-13.

Johnson’s collegiate playing career began at Navarro College in 2013-15. Johnson earned Academic All-Conference honors in both seasons at Navarro. Johnson transferred from Navarro to play baseball under head coach Tommy Boggs at Concordia University for two seasons. While there Johnson earned Academic All-Conference honors in 2016 and 2017.

In May 2017, Johnson graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in business management. Johnson’s father, Skip Johnson, is currently the head baseball coach at the University of Oklahoma. His mother is Cathy Johnson and brother is Garrett Johnson.

Johnson is engaged to Bailey Florence from McKinney, Texas.
