Blinn College volleyball downs Wharton, 3-1

WHARTON, Texas — Blinn College volleyball (24-7, 6-0) downed Wharton County Junior College, 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-20 and 25-18), on Tuesday night. 

"It is nice to get the win, but we need to stop making so many mistakes," said Terry Gamble, Blinn head coach. "Wharton played really good and I give them credit." 

Shelby Sheets led Blinn's offense with 32 kills, while Taylor Henderson followed with a season-high 17 kills and recorded a .552 hitting percentage. Samantha Boatman led Blinn with 26 assists and Roxanne Morris followed with 24. 

On defense Cheyenne Te'o led the Buccaneers with 17 digs. Julia Fritz followed with 13 digs, Sheets recorded 10 and Boatman posted eight. Henderson recorded six blocks, while Jasmine McLemore followed with five and Sheets recorded three. 

Blinn opened the match 1-0 after defeating Wharton, 25-15, in the first set. The Pioneers evened the match 1-1 after sealing a 27-25 win. The Buccaneers went on to win the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-18, to take the match and stay undefeated in conference.

Next, the Buccaneers will compete against Coastal Bend College on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. on the road. 

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
