Buccaneers hold off Coastal Bend for 76-70 victory

BRENHAM, Texas — Jade Rochelle led the Buccaneers with 17 points as the team defeated Coastal Bend College in a 76-70 win on Wednesday night in the Kruse Center.

The win marks Blinn's second straight Region XIV conference win as the Buccaneers conference record moves to 3-4 and overall record increases to 9-7.

"Our pieces are starting to come together; we all have a role and we are finally starting to find it," sophomore Ke'Asia Williams said.

Aaliyah Holmes followed Rochelle on offense with 12 points, while Alexus Wykoff and Williams joined in with double digits with 11 points each.

Trailing 8-4 to open the quarter, Rochelle led Blinn on a 6-0 run to give the Buccaneers a lead that the Buccaneers held onto until the final quarter. Holmes sparked Blinn's offense in the second quarter when she led Blinn during an 11-0 run by recording three shots from downtown. Blinn closed out the second quarter with four consecutive points to head into the locker room with a 32-19 lead.

Blinn continued to pull away from Coastal Bend in the third quarter as Kayla Konarik kicked things off with two three-pointers. Jade Rochelle scored the next seven of eight points for Blinn to head into the final quarter with a 49-36 lead. In the final quarter Coastal Bend creeped up on Blinn and managed to even the score 68-68 with 55.9 seconds left. Williams, who led Blinn with nine points in the final quarter, came up with a layup to put the Buccaneers back on top and scored the final two free throws of the game for the win.

"We had a big lead and it was shocking that they came back, but we all got together as a team and focused mentally," said Williams.

The Buccaneers return to the Kruse Center on Wednesday, Jan. 17 when they take on Angelina College at 5:30 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
