Blinn College volleyball opens Tyler Tournament with sweep over Hutchinson

TYLER, Texas — Blinn College volleyball (14-6, 2-0)) opened the Tyler Tournament strong with a sweep over Hutchinson Community College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20 and 25-19), for its seventh straight win. Monroe College managed to end Blinn's winning streak by defeating the Buccaneers 3-1 (23-25, 31-29, 20-25, 18-25) to conclude the day.

Blinn 3 – Hutchinson 0

The Buccaneers won their seventh straight game by sweeping Hutchinson, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20 and 25-19).

Shelby Sheets led the offense with 22 kills, while also recording seven digs and two aces. Brie-Anna Armstrong followed with 10 kills after posting a .500 hitting percentage.

Roxanne Morris led Blinn with 19 assists, while recording nine digs, three blocks and two aces. Samantha Boatman followed with 15 assists.

On defense, Cheyenne Te'o led with 11 digs.

The Buccaneers took control of the match early with a 25-21 victory in the first set. Blinn held onto the momentum in the second set to win 25-20 and finalized the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

Monroe 3 – Blinn 1

Monroe dealt Blinn its first loss in eight games by the score of 3-1 (23-25, 31-29, 20-25 and 18-25).

Sheets led the Buccaneers offense with 29 kills, while also recording seven digs in the match. Morris led the Buccaneers with 20 assists and 11 digs, while posting eight kills. Boatman followed right behind with 19 assists and 10 digs.

After losing the first set 25-23 and falling behind in the match, Blinn fought back to even the match with a 31-29 win in the second set. However, Monroe regained the momentum with a 25-20 victory in the third set and won the match by the score of 25-18 in the final set.

The Buccaneers will finish the Tyler Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 29. First, Blinn will face No. 6 Seward County Community College at 1 p.m. before competing against No. 9 Hill College at 3 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
