Buccaneers outlast Lamar to open Clarendon Classic, 3-2

CLARENDON, Texas — Blinn College volleyball (11-5, 1-0) rallied in the final two sets to defeat Lamar Community College, 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11), on Friday afternoon to open the Clarendon Classic and claim its fourth straight victory.

"We did not play our best today, but made some plays when it mattered," said Terry Gamble, Blinn head coach. "Getting the win was good."

Shelby Sheets led the offense with 22 kills and five aces, while recording eight digs. Roxanne Morris and Taylor Henderson followed with nine kills each. In addition, Morris recorded 20 assists and 10 digs, while Henderson posted six blocks. Samantha Boatman led Blinn with 21 assists.

After falling behind in the match, 2-1, the Buccaneers competed hard for a 25-21 victory to send the game into the fifth set. Blinn continued to rally in the final set for a 15-11 win to take the match.

Earlier in the match, Lamar opened with a 25-21 victory. The Buccaneers answered back with a 25-22 win in the second set to even the match. Lamar led the match 2-1 after defeating Blinn, 25-20, in the third set.

The Buccaneers will face Clarendon College on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. to closeout the Clarendon Classic.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
