Buccaneers manage 3-2 win over New Mexico Military

ODESSA, Texas - The Buccaneers opened the first day of the Odessa Tournament with a 2-0 record after downing New Mexico Military Institute, 3-2, and sweeping Barton Community College, 3-0, on Friday in Odessa.

Blinn pulled off the 3-2 win over New Mexico Military by the scores of 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, and 15-12 to open the tournament. The Buccaneers kept the wave of momentum rolling with a sweep over Barton by the scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 25-22 to finish off the day undefeated. The Buccaneers record increases to 8-2 overall.

Blinn 3 - New Mexico Military Institute 2

The Buccaneers' opening match was hard fought as Blinn played its first fifth set of the season to knock down New Mexico Military, 3-2.

New Mexico Military started out 1-0 after downing the Buccaneers 25-19, but the Buccaneers fought back to lead the match 2-1 after picking up 25-16 and 25-23 victories in the second and third sets. New Mexico Military evened the match 2-2 with a 25-22 win to force a fifth. The Buccaneers came out on top 15-12 to seal the win.

"The girls worked hard," said Kalie Mader, Blinn head coach. "We started slow, but they fought through it and got better."

Blinn 3 - Barton 0

The Buccaneers sealed their second win of the day with a 3-0 win over Barton to remain undefeated in the Odessa Tournament.

The Buccaneers played a close first set against Barton, but walked off the court with a 25-21 win to start the match. In the second set, Blinn clinched a 10-point victory as they downed Barton 25-15 to lead the match 2-0 before finishing Barton off 25-22 in the third set for Blinn’s fifth sweep of the season.

The Buccaneers will close out the Odessa Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Midland College at 11 a.m. and Odessa College at 1 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
