Blinn showcases strength in sweep over Western Texas, 3-0

MIDLAND, Texas - The Buccaneers clinched their fourth straight win this season with the sweep of Western Texas College at the Midland Tournament on Saturday morning in Midland.

Blinn dominated early to take down Western Texas, 3-0, before splitting the day with a 3-1 loss to Laredo Community College. Blinn closes the tournament with a 3-1 record and is now 4-1 overall.

Blinn 3 - Western Texas 0

The Buccaneers showcased a young strong defense in a sweep over Western Texas by the score of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-14 to open the second day of the Midland Tournament. Blinn recorded minimal errors and jumped on the Westerners early to keep them out of the match.

The Buccaneers defense was led by Julia Fritz with 13 digs, Mikayla Adam with 11 digs and Kayla Valigura with five blocks. Roxanne Morris led the Buccaneers with 8 kills, while Amina Olajuwon stepped in with seven. Paola Marie Salas Adorno served up six aces and Kylee Kaaihue dished out 16 assists in the win.

Laredo 3 - Blinn 1

The Buccaneers suffered their first loss of the season as Laredo grabbed a 3-1 victory by the score of 25-21, 18-25, 17-25 and 20-25.

Blinn kept the momentum rolling into the first set to win it 25-21 before Laredo took control in the next three sets.

Adorno led the Buccaneers with 11 kills, while Morris added 10. Fritz led Blinn with 21 digs, while Valigura recorded four blocks and Kaaihue came up with 25 assists.

"We played clean in our first match today, but as far as our second, we weren't executing late into the match," said Kalie Mader, Blinn head coach. "It's something we will have to continue to work on. Overall, they played hard this weekend."

Blinn will host its first non-conference match on Thursday, Aug. 31 versus Hillsborough Community College at 6 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
