Blinn uses balanced scoring and stingy defense to blow by Paris, 64-34

BRENHAM, Texas – Balanced scoring and a stingy defense effort against sharp-shooting Paris Junior College was enough for Blinn College women's basketball to roll to a 64-34 victory Saturday afternoon inside the P.E. Building.

The impressive victory gives the Buccaneers a 10-5 overall record. Blinn has now won five games in a row and improves to 4-2 in Region XIV play.

"I thought our defense was really good today to hold them to 34 points," said Jeff Jenkins, Blinn head coach.

Ke'Asia Williams led a balanced Blinn attack with 14 points as she was the only player in double figures. Ten different Blinn players scored in the victory as Karissa Black scored nine, Jasmine Redmon chipped in eight and Alexis Oaks scored seven. Janae Smith only scored four points but was tasked with shutting down Leah Josell, the top 3-point threat for Paris.

"I just tried to stop her from penetrating too deep and getting a good look at the goal," Smith said. "I just tried to keep my feet moving and not get caught flat-footed against her."

Blinn got going right from the beginning as the Buccaneers scored the first six points of the game and rolled to a 13-4 lead after four consecutive points scored by Bryanna Taylor with 2:53 left in the first. Redmond scored the final points of the quarter on two free throws as she led in the quarter with six points to help Blinn out to a 15-6 lead after the first.

Blinn continued to roll in the second quarter as the Buccaneers outscored Paris in all four quarters. Oaks, Jade Rochelle and Williams each scored four points in the second as the Buccaneers outscored Paris 17-10 to take a 32-16 lead into the break.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the third quarter as Blinn hit the lone field goal for both teams in the period. Regardless of the offensive struggle, Blinn was still able to outscore Paris 8-4 to control the game with a 40-20 lead heading into the fourth.

Blinn showcased its depth as eight different players scored in the fourth quarter led by Black with eight points. Blinn outscored Paris 24-14 in the final period to roll to the 30-point victory.

Blinn will continue Region XIV play with a road game on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at Coastal Bend College at 5:30 p.m. Coastal Bend currently owns an 0-5 record through five conference games.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 34 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
