BRENHAM, Texas – No. 14 Blinn College women's basketball was able to get baskets and stops when it needed it the most in the final minute to come away with a 60-55 victory over McLennan Community College Monday night inside the P.E. Building.
The Buccaneers trailed 55-54 with 1:07 left but was able to score the final six points of the game for the win and improve to 3-2 on the season.
"We played a lot harder tonight than we did Saturday," said Jeff Jenkins, Blinn head coach. "I told the team after the game that they overcame a lot of adversity tonight."
Ke'Asia Williams came alive in the fourth quarter to score nine of her team-high 15 points to lead Blinn.
"It was a tough game especially with our posts fouling out, the guards had to step up," Williams said. "My offensive mentality went from zero to 100 in the fourth quarter."
Bryanna Taylor was also in double figures with 11. Jasmine Redmon finished with seven while Karissa Black, Denisha Ford and Brenisha Coleman each scored six points in the win.
It all came down to the final minute of the game as McLennan led Blinn 55-54 with 1:07 left but it was the Buccaneers coming away with the big buckets down the stretch. Ford and Black each hit a basket to give Blinn a 58-55 lead with 26.2 left. Defensively, the Buccaneers shut out McLennan in the final minute and added a free throw from Black and Williams for the five-point victory.
Taylor had the offense going early on for Blinn. After McLennan scored the first 10 points of the game, the Buccaneers outscored McLennan 18-4 in the final 5:16 to claim a 18-14 lead with six points from Taylor. Williams and Taylor each scored four in the second quarter as Blinn and McLennan each scored 10 points with the Buccaneers clinging to a 28-24 lead at the half.
McLennan got within one point after the third quarter but it was Redmon scoring four points in the third to help the Buccaneers. Blinn entered the fourth quarter with a slim 43-42 lead and then came away with the victory after an impressive fourth quarter.
Blinn will get an opportunity to avenge a loss earlier in the season against Temple College on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
