BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College women's basketball team rarely uses the majority of the shot clock on offense but the team decided to run a more patient offense and it worked for a 78-32 victory over Southwestern Christian College Dec. 8 in Brenham.
The Buccaneers picked up their ninth win of the season by 46 points and it could have been a lot worse if Blinn didn't slow the ball down on offense in the second half and work on its passing and set plays.
"That's not really our personality to slow it down but we really tried to get a few reversals," said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. "Our defense has improved and we have now held our opponents to 32, 39 and 54 in the last three games."
Katelynn Johnson led a balanced scoring effort for Blinn College with 13 points and 10 of her points came in the first half. Nancy Warioba was the only other Buccaneer to reach double figures with 10 points but a handful of players were close.
Ashley Cherry and Brianna Luton each had nine points while Courtney Dawson and Micarah Malone chipped in with eight points each in the win.
Blinn got the game in hand quickly by scoring the first nine points and holding on to a 21-8 lead halfway through the first half. Johnson was hot early on by nailing a pair of 3-pointers and scoring 10 points in the opening half.
The Buccaneers were able to end the half as crisp as they started by finalizing the first half on a 14-1 run to grab a 42-16 lead at the break. Warioba causes problems for Southwestern with her rebounding ability and she was also able to score eight points in the opening half.
Blinn took the air out of the ball in the second half but utilizing the majority of the shot clock and working the ball around the court in the set offense. Even with the slower pace, Blinn was able to control the game and even extend its lead after the half was over.
Cherry and Malone each scored six points for the Buccaneers in the second half to help the team cruise to victory and improve their record to 9-4 overall.
Blinn is 3-1 in conference and will put that record to the test on the road when they face San Jacinto College-North on Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
