Blinn suffers sweep at Alvin, 7-3 and 7-5

Alvin, Texas — Blinn College softball was able to produce 20 hits against Alvin Community College in a doubleheader, but the Dolphins managed to outscore the Buccaneers in both games by the scores of 7-3 and 7-5 on Thursday afternoon.

With the pair of losses, the Buccaneers fall to 25-15 overall and 14-6 in Region XIV play.

Alvin 7 – Blinn 3

Although the Buccaneers were the first to hold a lead, Alvin was able to put up six runs in the fifth inning to run away with a 7-3 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Blinn offense outhit Alvin 10 to nine, but the Buccaneers were only able to score three runs in the game. Abby Olejniczak, Amy Alexander, Tori Alvarez-Lopez and Sarah Cedillo led the offense with two hits each.

Blinn took the lead first in the second inning when Calli Birch scored on a line-drive single off the bat of Olejniczak.

In the fourth inning Alvin evened the score 1-1 and in the fifth inning the Dolphins took off with six runs to pull ahead 7-1.

Blinn scored its final two runs of the game in the seventh inning when Alexander tripled for Sydney Gutierrez to score and Alvarez-Lopez followed with a single to drive Alexander in.

Alvin 7 – Blinn 5

Although the Buccaneers tallied 10 hits against Alvin, the Dolphins defeated Blinn 7-5 to conclude the doubleheader with a sweep.

Gutierrez drove in two runs and Alvarez-Lopez and Chelsea Armendariz each drove in one run, while Gutierrez and Olejniczak each scored two runs to lead Blinn's offense.

Blinn quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first inning to open the game. Olejniczak put Blinn on the board first by stealing home, while Gutierrez scored on a single hit by Armendariz.

Alvin cut Blinn's lead in half by scoring one run in the bottom half of the inning. The Dolphins took a 4-2 lead after adding three more runs in the third inning.

Blinn answered back with one run in the fourth inning as Lauren Coerver scored on a double by Alvarez-Lopez to cut Alvin's lead to 4-3. However, Alvin scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull back ahead 7-3.

Blinn scored its final two runs in the seventh inning after Gutierrez sent the ball over the fence for Olejniczak to also score.

The Buccaneers will be back in action on the road against Galveston College on Friday, April 20 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
