Buccaneers sweep doubleheader from No. 19 Angelina, 12-1 and 5-3

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College Softball had lost two previous games to Angelina College earlier in the season so the Buccaneers took a bit of revenge in sweeping a doubleheader from Angelina by the score of 12-1 and 5-3 Monday afternoon in Hohlt Park.

"These were two good wins to even out our record against Angelina this season," said Rick Church, Blinn head coach. "Angelina has some great hitters and we held them to four runs today."

The Buccaneers now improve to 30-12 overall with the sweep. Blinn remains 14-2 in Region XIV play.

Blinn 12 – Angelina 1

Blinn started early and never looked back in beating Angelina 12-1 in five innings with the help of 13 hits in the opening game.

Amy Alexander brought in a pair of runs with a double and a ground out while Gabriela Gomez hit a double and a single to bring in a pair of runs. Alyssa Hitt also had a double and two RBIs in the win.

Colleen Bentke had plenty of run support in the circle for the win as she pitched five innings without an earned run on four hits and three strikeouts. Bentke improves to 16-3 on the season with the win.

The scoring started right from the beginning as Blinn loaded the bases with singles from Nicole Garcia and Kalli Edwards and Shelby Achille drew a walk. Garcia was able to score the first run on a wild pitch and then Alexander made the score 2-0 with an RBI ground out. Gomez capped the scoring with a double to the fence in left to make it 3-0 Blinn.

The Buccaneers kept rolling in the second inning as Hitt walked to begin the inning and then came in to score on a Garcia single for a 4-0 lead. Edwards made the score 5-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Emily Noah kept the scoring going in the second with an RBI single to center for a 6-0 lead. Alexander followed with an RBI double to center for a 7-0 edge. Bentke got in on the hitting action with an RBI single to make it 8-0. Alexander touched the plate on a wild pitch for a 9-0 lead and then Hitt capped the scoring with a two-run double to center to make it 11-0 Blinn. Angelina did get its lone run in the third inning to get within 11-1.

Blinn continued to score in the bottom of the third when Achille reached base after getting hit by a pitch and then scoring on an RBI single by Gomez to center for a 12-1 lead that would hold up until the final out as Bentke kept the Roadrunners grounded the rest of the way.

Blinn 5 – Angelina 3

The second game wasn't as easy as Blinn scored the first five runs and then held on for a 5-3 victory to secure the sweep over Angelina.

Chelsea Armendariz brought in a couple runs with a double and two singles for a 3-for-3 game. Gomez, Calli Birch and Emily Taylor each had an RBI in the win.

Sam Junkin got the start in the second game and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out two to get the win. Kamryn Boucher came on in the fifth and didn't allow an earned run to hold on to the victory.

Blinn got off to a fast start again in the first inning as Garcia led off with a double and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Gomez for a 1-0 lead.

The Buccaneers kept it going in the second inning when Alivia Villareal walked to begin the inning and then scored on an RBI ground out by Birch for a 2-0 lead after two.

Armendariz helped to double the lead in the third inning with a two-run single to give the Buccaneers a 4-0 lead. Taylor capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center to give Blinn a 5-0 lead. Angelina scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning to get within 5-3 but that would be all the runs given up by Blinn in the two-run victory.

Blinn will be back at home on Thursday, April 13 against San Jacinto College-South for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park.
