Blinn prevails in 90-86 win over Coastal Bend College

BRENHAM, Texas – Antione Lister and Markques Houston combined for 59 points in Blinn's 90-86 win over Coastal Bend College on Wednesday night in the Kruse Center. Lister scored a season-high 30 points, while Houston scored a season-high 29 points for the Buccaneers.

"Our guys played really well, especially in the last 30 minutes," said Scott Schumacher, Blinn head coach. "Coastal Bend is a good team, but we executed and were lucky enough to get a win."

Lister paced Blinn in the first half with 16 points, while Houston followed with 15. Coastal Bend went on an 11-0 run within the first six minutes of play to take a 15-10 lead. Houston ended the run by scoring the next six points for Blinn, while Lister made two straight baskets from downtown for the Buccaneers to take a 24-21 lead. Coastal Bend answered back with a three-point shot to level the score 24-24. Tyrus Grayson, who scored nine points in the victory, sparked another 9-0 run for Blinn to pull ahead 35-24 with less than eight minutes left in the first quarter. In the final four minutes, Coastal Bend recorded 11 points to gain on Blinn 45-40 heading into the locker room.

The Buccaneers stayed ahead of the Coastal Bend Cougars in the second half until the final five minutes of the game when the Cougars evened the score 78-78. In the final minutes, Houston went six-for-six at the free-throw line and made his fifth shot from downtown to give Blinn back the lead and stay ahead of Coastal Bend until the win.

"I was able to read their defense and step up and shoot threes," Houston said. "We just stuck together, played defense and hit big shots when we needed to."

Lister and Houston led Blinn with five shots from downtown each as Blinn sealed its third straight victory.

The win increases Blinn to 13-6 overall and 4-5 in Region XIV play.

The Buccaneers travel to take on Lamar State College - Port Arthur on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
