The architect of one of the most prolific offenses in the NJCAA, Ryan Mahon enters his seventh season as Blinn College’s head football coach.

Mahon holds a 28-29 record in six seasons with the Buccaneers.

In 2021, the Buccaneers qualified for the Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) playoffs following a 5-5 season, including a 3-4 record in conference play. Additionally, 14 players were named to the SWJCFC all-conference team, including first-team selections Joshua Berry (running back), Trent Pullen (offensive line), Bryton Thompson (defensive line); second-team selections Kaghen Roach (defensive line), Nate Dyman (linebacker), Justice Ugochukwu (defensive back), and Collin Brown (defensive specialist); and honorable mentions Tre Harden (wide receiver), Tristen Hickman (offensive line), Alejandro Quintero (kicker), Will Prendergast (defensive line), Ladarius Henry (defensive back), Blake Thompson (defensive back), and Ty Warrick (punter). Berry and Thompson were also named 2021 NJCAA Division I All-American honorable mentions.

Also following the 2021 season, 17 Buccaneers committed to four-year universities: Blake Thompson (Iowa State), Justice Ugo (Houston), Bryton Thompson (UTEP), Will Prendergast (Florida International), Bryce Linder (North Texas), Kahgen Roach (North Texas), Collin Brown (North Texas), Alejandro Quintero (Indiana), Josh Berry (Texas State), Edgerrin Dillard-Williams (Incarnate Word), Taurean Muhammad (Houston Baptist), Trent Pullen (Abilene Christian), Jordan Jenkins (Indiana State), Keion Bennett (Texas Southern), Makel Williams (Fort Hayes), Juan Quezada (Texas A&M-Kingsville), and Joshua Payne-Morgan (Texas Wesleyan).

In 2017, Mahon led the Buccaneers to their first playoff berth since 2013 after claiming a SWJCFC co-championship, and qualified for the El Toro Bowl. Blinn finished the season ranked 12th in the nation. Blinn was ranked in the top 10 in the nation for six consecutive weeks and reached as high as No. 4 in the national rankings.

In 2018, the Buccaneers defeated 14th-ranked Scottsdale Community College 23-20 in the Valley of the Sun Bowl. Blinn was ranked as high as 6th in the nation and finished the season 15th.

Under Mahon, 76 Buccaneers have earned NJCAA All-America and All-Region XIV Conference honors. Antwuan Jackson Jr., Vonte Davis, Corrion Ballard, D'Anthony Hopkins, and Earnest Patterson earned both All-America and all-conference honors. Jackson was named the SWJCFC Most Valuable Player in 2017, and Ballard was named the All-Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.

Seven former Buccaneers who played under Mahon have signed with National Football League teams. Danny Gray signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, while Keric Wheatfall signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 draft. Kendall Sheffield signed with the Atlanta Falcons after being selected in the fourth round in 2019. Additionally, undrafted free agents Corrion Ballard signed with the Carolina Panthers, Javier Edwards signed with the Houston Texans, Jhavonte Dean signed with the Cleveland Browns, and Josh Nurse signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

Mahon came to Blinn after one year as Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College’s offensive coordinator. Before that, Mahon spent 10 seasons at Tyler Junior College, the last eight years as offensive coordinator and associate head coach. During his tenure at Tyler, Mahon coached eight NJCAA All-Americans, two Southwest Junior College Football Conference offensive MVPs, one SWJCFC MVP, and 34 all-conference offensive selections.

Before his successful run at Tyler, Mahon served one season as running backs coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce (2004). In 2003 and 2004, Mahon was the running backs/receivers coach at Feather River (Calif.) College.

A native of La Grande, Ore., Mahon played quarterback at Eastern Oregon University, where he was a four-year letter winner.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in history at Eastern Oregon University and his Master of Education in health and kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler. Mahon and his wife, Pam, reside in Brenham with their sons, Ty and Eli, and two beagles, Drew and Kate.
