Devon Gray enters his first season on the Blinn College football coaching staff as the running backs coach. Gray comes to Blinn after serving as the offensive quality control coach and assistant wide receivers coach for one season at University of the Incarnate Word under head coach Larry Kennan.

Prior to Incarnate Word, Gray spent one season as running backs coach and special teams coordinator for the New Mexico Stars of the American Indoor Football League.

Gray began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Tarleton State University, where he spent two seasons as the running backs coach and assisted with the special teams units. During Gray’s tenure, the offense rushed for 157.6 yards a game and averaged 5.7 yards per carry, and running backs were more involved in the pass game in the air raid offense led by offensive coordinator Mason Miller. 

After attending high school in Chandler, Ariz., Gray earned a football scholarship to attend Coffeyville Community College (Kan.), where he redshirted and earned his associate degree in a year and a half. He received a full football scholarship at Tarleton State University, where he played slot receiver in 2009-2012 and lettered all four seasons. In Gray’s first season at Tarleton, he helped the Texans win their second Lone Star Conference (LSC) championship in school history and advance two rounds in the Division II NCAA playoffs. Gray had three catches for 33 yards in Tarleton State’s thrilling double overtime win over Texas A&M University-Kingsville in the opening round of playoffs in 2009. He averaged 12.9 yards per catch that season and was known for his disciplined route running and great catching ability.

In 2011, Gray earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Tarleton State and began working on his master’s degree in 2012. In 2013, he signed to play with the Florida Tide of the National Spring Football League and the Odessa Wildcatters of the Professional Arena League. In 2016, he completed his master’s degree in kinesiology from Tarleton State.

Gray is the son of Melvin and Yvette Gray. His father, Melvin, played 12 years in the NFL. His mother, Yvette, is a federal attorney in the state of Arizona.
