Blinn quarterback Brock Landis named NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Blinn College freshman quarterback Brock Landis was named NJCAA Division I Football Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in Week 9 of the 2018 season.

Landis completed 20-of-29 passes for 481 yards and six touchdowns to lead No. 20 Blinn to a 58-35 victory over New Mexico Military Institute to clinch a playoff spot in his second start of the season.

"It is an honor to be named the player of the week because there are so many great players in the NJCAA," Landis said. "We had a good game plan going into the final game of the regular season and Coach Ryan Mahon prepared me. The wide receivers helped me out a lot by making big plays."

To clinch a playoff spot, the Buccaneers had to win their final game of the season. The win allowed Blinn to claim the No. 3 seed in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference playoffs.

"He had a great game and the stats speak volumes," said Mahon, Blinn head coach. "It is an amazing accomplishment, especially since it was his second start of the season. He is a player who has a great desire to get better every game. I couldn't be more proud of him for having that kind of game when we really needed a win."

In two starts, Landis has totaled 654 passing yards for eight touchdowns.

Landis is the third Buccaneer to earn player of the week honors this season. David Jara was named NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Player of the Week for his performance in Week 8 and Shelby Sheets was named NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tachikara Offensive Player of the Week in Week 5.

The Buccaneers concluded the regular season with a 6-3 overall record and a 4-3 conference record. The Buccaneers will face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in the conference semi-finals Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2p.m. in Miami, Okla.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
