Quick Facts About Buccaneer Athletics

Blinn College athletics boasts one of the most storied programs in the country, with 118 years of tradition and pride in the south-central Texas area.

Blinn College is member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Region XIV Athletic Conference, and the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.

Men's athletic programs include baseball, basketball, soccer, golf and football. Women's programs include softball, basketball, soccer, golf and volleyball. Complementing the athletic teams are the Blinn Cheerleaders and the Buccaneer Treasures Dance Team. All athletic teams are located on the Brenham campus.

Originally the Blinn Gophers from 1903-1929, the team changed their name to the Bulldogs during the 1930-1931 season, before finally settling on the Buccaneers in 1932.

Buccaneer teams have claimed an impressive 42 NJCAA Team National Championship Titles since 1987, including:

  • Men's Division I Cross Country (1993, 1994)
  • Men's Indoor Track & Field (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995)
  • Men's Outdoor Track & Field (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995)

In 1995 and 1996, Blinn College made history by becoming the first college to win back-to-back NJCAA football championships with 24 consecutive wins.  The Buccaneers were led by quarterback Michael Bishop (’94), who finished second in the voting to Ricky Williams in the 1998 Heisman Trophy voting as a member of the Kansas State Wildcats.

In 2010, former Buccaneer quarterback and NJCAA All-American Cam Newton (’09) was selected as the 76th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy as the most outstanding college football player in the United States for 2010, becoming only the second player to win the coveted award with ties to the NJCAA.  Newton led the Auburn Tigers to a perfect 14-0 record, a SEC Championship, and a BCS title game win, and was also selected as the number one overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft.
